I remember the first time I went diving with sharks. I was nervous. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and people’s comments did nothing to calm my trepidations. Was the risk worth the reward? Why would a sane person want to do this? It turns out all that apprehension was misguided. I knew that the minute I hit the water.

It turns out most sharks are shy. It was the exact opposite of what most people think. The ones that weren’t shy couldn’t care less that I was even there. You see, we aren’t on their menu. For that reason, they aren’t the aggressive, scary animals that we see in the movies. To watch them swim and glide effortlessly through the water is hypnotizing. It’s funny how wrong people can be. So, the scary things weren’t so scary, and more so they are important.

Sharks play a vital role in keeping the oceans healthy. They are so crucial that without them, we risk a collapse of the ecosystem. As apex predators, they maintain the ocean’s various populations. In addition, they feed on the sick and the weak fish, which helps those populations thrive. Sharks have been around for over 400 million years, making them older than trees and one of Earth’s greatest survivors.
